Backyard Gardening

Backyard farming kits serve as a bridge to supplementing dietary needs and lowering cost of necessities such as groceries. The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources retails kits for $10.

Backyard Farming kits are available the following times:

9:00 – 5:00 pm Mon-Friday at The Department of Agriculture, located on East Bay Street, Nassau

The Bahamas Agricultural And Marine Institute also offers certification courses in backyard farming.

The course duration is seven (7) weeks. The online course is for students interested in growing food plants for their own consumption. Lessons are presented via online instruction and interactive meetings.

• Seedling Maintenance And Care
• Soil Management
• Composting Techniques
• Irrigation Techniques
• Pest Control

Students Will Learn To:

• Select Sites For Farming
• Determine Crops Seasons
• Graft And Root Plants
• Control Pest
• Build Soil Beds For Crops
• Manage Irrigation
